Today the Queensland Premier hosted a Housing Roundtable – an important and very welcome first step in addressing Queensland’s housing crisis.

The announcement of the Roundtable and subsequent Housing Summit- to be held on 20 October- comes off the back of Property Council advocacy and the release of A Home for Every Queenslander report last week.

The Roundtable was attended by senior Queensland Government ministers and bureaucrats, including the Premier, Deputy Premier, Treasurer, Housing Minister, Public Works Minister and a number of Directors-General.

Around 40 stakeholders attended in total, with a cross-section of State and local government, industry, not-for-profit and community organisations.

Issues discussed ranged from crisis and emergency accommodation, through to medium- and long-term planning solutions. While stakeholders diverged on some policy positions, there was a willingness in the room to work together and address the full breadth of issues facing housing in Queensland.

The discussion at the Roundtable will help set the agenda for the Summit, which will provide an important forum to bring together key stakeholders and place all ideas on the table.

In the lead up to the Summit, Government is expected to do a broad call out for ideas to address both immediate issues and suggest longer-term solutions.
