Government sets priorities

The Property Council was delighted to host Hon Jackie Trad MP, Deputy Premier, Minister for Transport, Minister for Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning, and Minister for Trade, in early May, at one of her first addresses to the property industry.

Central to her message was Queensland’s future lying in the opportunities that our cities, towns and major centres provide.

As we move towards a knowledge-based economy, these urban centres will become increasingly central to productivity and economic growth. To enable Queensland to attract and retain the best talent, the Deputy Premier outlined that our communities need to:

  • be better designed,
  • be better connected,
  • have better social infrastructure, and
  • have better transport links.

The Deputy Premier acknowledged that there will need to be partnerships between all levels of government- and the private sector- to unlock more opportunities.

To achieve this, the Deputy Premier’s priorities will include:

  • establishing Building Queensland as a new and rigorous infrastructure advisor to the state
  • finalising the new South East Queensland Regional Plan and ensuring it is supported by proper infrastructure planning,
  • enhancing the role of urban design and supporting superior design outcomes,
  • delivering a new state infrastructure plan, and
  • continuing the task of planning reform to deliver a more efficient system, but with a stronger focus on plans that matter, and a real say for the community.

The Property Council event provided the opportunity for the Deputy Premier to announce the establishment of Building Queensland. The independent advisory board will ensure there is a consistent framework across government for prioritising and assessing costs and benefits of competing projects, increase opportunities for leveraging Commonwealth funding, and will develop a pipeline of projects for the government to consider.

The Queensland Government is currently seeking expressions of interest for the board positions on the newly created Building Queensland advisory body. The board will meet a minimum of three times a year, with applications closing on Monday May 25.

The Deputy Premier outlined to the audience that Economic Development Queensland will be retained, with the potential to play a much larger role in the facilitation and development of catalytic infrastructure, to unlock economic activity and community growth.

The Property Council would like to sincerely thank the Honourable Jackie Trad MP, Deputy Premier, Minister for Transport, Minister for Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning, and Minister for Trade, for taking the time to inform the industry of the policies and priorities of her portfolio. Thanks must also go to our sponsor, Dexus Property Group, without their support the Downtown Breakfast series would not be possible.
