Government responds to EPA inquiry

Government has released its response to recommendations to the Independent Inquiry into the Environment Protection Authority.

Of the 48 recommendations, the Government response supports 40 in full, seven in principle, and one in part. $45.5 million has also been committed to fund a five-year reform program. The reform package will deliver, among other things, an EPA that will provide greater clarity and guidance for industry about environmental protection responsibilities.

The Inquiry, undertaken between 2015-16 made several recommendations to the Government about how the EPA can be equipped to meet the environment and human health challenges faced today and into the future. The Property Council made a submission to the Inquiry based on input from our membership and was part of the Community and Industry Advisory Group. The Property Council welcomed Government’s commitment to a more consistent risk based approach to risk screening, assessment and remediation requirements and ongoing compliance mechanisms.  We are working with the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning on the reform process, to bring efficiencies that can reduce ongoing costs for our members.
