Future Directions Networking Event Update
On Thursday 20 June, Illawarra Future Directions hosted a networking event which focused on the future of Wollongong and growth of the CBD. The event was held at Births & Deaths, one of the new bars to recently open in the CBD and it was attended by 70 people.
Jennifer Macquarie, Director at Fountaindale Group led a Q&A session with Mark Grimson, Economic Development Manager from Wollongong City Council who provided a great summary of the key strategic goals for Council’s new Economic Development Strategy for 2019-2029 including:
- Jobs target of 10,0 additional jobs in Wollongong
- Lifting median incomes by generating new industries
- Targeting industries to the area’s existing talent pool.
Some of the key items raised for discussion included the changes in the workforce across the region over the last 10 years and the need for more full time, higher paying jobs, upcoming commercial office developments, access to industrial lands and how the property industry can help to educate stakeholders on the business opportunities available in Wollongong and help attract investment.
The event provided a great opportunity for industry professionals to network and get involved in the conversation about the future of Wollongong in a relaxed environment. It was also fantastic to support a small local business located in the CBD and showcase the evening economy in Wollongong.
