Future Directions: Creating Premier Precincts
The Queensland Future Directions committee hosted a breakfast on Thursday 12 October, exploring how Brisbane’s existing and emerging precincts are working to position themselves as world-class destinations.
A sold-out crowd gathered at Gadens to hear from the people behind Brisbane’s most exciting precinct projects. The expert panel included Luke Fraser, Development Director – HSW Consortium, Andrew Thompson, Project Director – West Village and Ryan McDonald, General Manager Property – South Bank Corporation. The conversation was moderated by Natalie Hoitz, Director – Urbis.
Luke Fraser spoke to the experience of the Howard Smith Wharves consortium in bidding for the right to develop their site and their journey from design to construction. Luke outlined the approach being taken by Howard Smith Wharves to deliver a new and engaging destination for Brisbanites. Central to the success of the precinct will be a unique food and beverage offer.
Ryan McDonald illustrated South Bank Corporation’s approach to developing their precinct over the last 25 years. While South Bank has been established as a world-leading sub-tropical destination, there continues to be a constant evolution of the offering to adapt to changing expectations. Currently South Bank is undertaking a planning exercise for the precinct’s next 25 years.
Andrew Thompson outlined the strong level of community engagement that was required to successfully navigate political sensitivities around the West Village development. The site, which contains the old Peter’s ice cream factory, has lent itself to creative activation. Collaboration with Brisbane artist David Bromley, and community activations such as the recent Ice Cream Festival, have enabled the development to accrue strong interest and establish itself as a new leading precinct.
The Property Council would like to thank Savills, Cedar Woods and Hutchinson Builders for their generous sponsorship of the Creating Premier Precincts breakfast, and to Gadens for hosting the event. Thanks must also go to Luke, Andrew, Ryan and Natalie for their insightful contributions.
