Fresh faces wanted for Property Council Committees
With 99 separate committees set to spill, the Property Council is calling for fresh faces to help shape the future of our industry. If you want to contribute to your industry, now is the time to nominate.
“Our members are at the heart of everything we do, and our committees play a critical role in driving the Property Council’s advocacy and engagement agenda,” says the Property Council’s chief operating officer, Kathy Mac Dermott.
“All committee roles are spilt every two years – and we are once again calling for new faces to take one of the 1,600-plus positions that will help set the strategic agenda for our industry.”
Committee members work with Property Council staff on policy and advocacy, events, industry research, professional development and awards programs.
In 2016, the Property Council launched its 40:40:20 campaign, setting a target of 40 per cent women, 40 per cent men and 20 per cent discretionary on all committees.
This target was exceeded, with women accounting for 43 per cent of the roughly 1,600 roles. The Property Council has relaunched this target ahead of the 2018 committee spill.
“We have an ongoing commitment to achieve diversity of thought, because we know this breeds the best discussions and decisions. When we get the gender balance right, we enhance diversity of thought and inclusiveness. We are also looking at other areas of diversity, including age, career stage and background,” Mac Dermott explains.
Mac Dermott says established leaders who have worked on committees for some time are recognising the spill as an opportunity to “step off and help others to step on – and we applaud that leadership”.
The Future Directions committees for emerging leaders in each state are a great stepping stone for people just starting out in the industry, Mac Dermott adds.
“Many committee chairs and division council members started out on our Future Directions’ committees. It’s a brilliant way to build a network and contacts – and you’ll then grow alongside those peers throughout your career.”
The Property Council encourages people to put their hands up for committees that reflect their areas of expertise.
Mac Dermott says many people are motivated to “give back” and make an enduring contribution through their work on committees.
“These are active, well-organised committees with ambitious goals and workplans. Participating does demand a significant commitment and contribution, but you’ll also learn and grow professionally and get a tremendous extension and deepening of your networks.”
Nominations open on 3 September and will close on 1 October. Committee membership is determined by executive directors and division councils. Nominees will be advised on 17 December.
