Federal Government inquiry updatesAs a result of the Double Dissolution of Parliament on 9 May 2016, all parliamentary committees ceased to exist, and any inquiries that were not completed have lapsed. At that time, there were a number of inquiries that were relevant to the Property Council’s residential membership that had not been completed. These include the Senate committee inquiry into non-conforming building products and the House of Representatives committee inquiry into home ownership, as well as the inquiry into value capture. The issue of home ownership and housing affordability continues to play out as the election campaign progresses, and the Property Council has put a number of policy solutions to both sides in our election platform. This issue will be a challenge well beyond the election, and we look forward to working constructively with whichever party is elected to bring about sensible reforms that improve housing supply, choice and affordability across the country. We also continue to engage with the Senior Officers’ Group established by the Building Ministers’ Forum on the strategies proposed to deal with non-conforming building products on a national level. We are also continuing to work with the Victorian Government on the issues arising in that jurisdiction. For further information on these issues, please contact Katharina Surikow, Policy Manager – Housing, on [email protected] or (02) 9033 1936.
