Face of Future Growth Breakfast

How will South East Queensland accommodate future population growth while maintaining our enviable way of life? This is the challenge the Queensland Government is considering in their review of the SEQ Regional Plan.

The Property Council’s ‘Face of Future Growth’ breakfast on 24 June explored this theme and provided an opportunity for members to gain industry and government perspectives into how the SEQRP review could benefit future property use across the region.

Brent Toderian, global thought-leader on urban planning and former Vancouver Chief Planner, presented the lessons that SEQ can draw from world’s best practice regional planning. Pointing to the experience of Vancouver and Calgary, Brent outlined that the key to meeting future growth challenges is high quality density developments. “Density done well”, Brent argues, is not the exclusive domain of the inner city but is also required in the suburbs and in greenfield developments.

Kerry Riethmuller, Acting Executive Director of Regional and Precinct Planning – DILGP, and Springfield Land Corporation’s Managing Director, Raynuha Sinnathamby, joined Brent on stage for a panel discussion moderated by the Property Council’s Qld Executive Director, Chris Mountford.

The panel explored the key challenges facing South East Queensland and how the new regional plan could improve the way growth will be accommodated across Queensland’s most populous region.

The Property Council has provided the Government with a comprehensive position paper outlining the industry’s perspective on what needs to be included in the new SEQ regional plan. The ‘Making the Plan a Reality‘ paper outlines key issues and lessons from past plans against the Government’s proposed SEQRP themes of Grow, Live, Connect, Sustain and Prosper. The Property Council has also proposed an additional theme of Achieve and articulated key measures and necessary actions that will be required to make the new plan more than a theoretical exercise.

A draft version of the revised regional plan is expected to be released by the Government in early October.

The Property Council would like to thank the speakers for sharing their urban planning expertise. This event would not have been possible without the partnership of the Queensland Government and major sponsor Dexus Property Group.
