Dual Occupancy – Update

The NT Government is seeking more public comment in regards to dual-occupancy options, which have the potential to revitalise out-dated buildings and improve neighbourhood communities.

Lands and Planning Minister David Tollner said dual occupancy would help to deliver diversity in housing choice and affordability for changing demographics.

The Planning Commission recommended to the NT Government a minimum applicable area of 900sqm, however this proposal applies 1,000sqm.

Any dual-occupancy development would be subject to assessment against existing controls in the NT Planning Scheme, which:

  • Limit building height to two storeys
  • Ensure buildings are setback an appropriate distance from existing dwellings
  • Seek the provision of private open space and landscaping on the site

A maximum of 60% of the land would be able to be covered by buildings, which is in direct response to feedback received from community and will assist in ensuring that buildings do not dominate the landscape.

The planning consent process will ensure that the community is aware of any proposed dual-occupancy and will allow interested parties an opportunity to provide comment on a dual-occupancy proposal.
