#designperth: Preview

We are excited to launch #DesignPerth, the follow-up to our ground-breaking report Transforming Perth, the Property Council would like to give you a sneak peak of the report below, and invite you to attend the launch event on 3 June.

The joint study with the Australian Greens, CODA Studio and Curtin University Sustainability Policy Institute (CUSP) will showcase a new vision and guide for infill development and urban regeneration in our city.   By focusing on the optimal development options for sites along some of Perth’s key transport corridors, our report demonstrates how well designed and innovative density can transform these corridors into vibrant Activity Corridors with a mix of housing, employment opportunities and services.

#DesignPerth builds on the original Transforming Perth report (2013), co-authored by the Property Council, the Office of Senator Scott Ludlam and the Australian Urban Design Research Centre, which  studied the potential housing yield in underdeveloped areas of 7 out of 18  activity corridors identified as future rapid transit routes in Perth’s Public Transport Plan for Perth in 2031.

#DesignPerth showcases an alternative vision to promote higher density-infill development by emphasising the importance of design and community vision in planning, and as part of the report we conducted intensive design testing on sites on each of these corridors and looked at the constraints and opportunities of each particular site, through a Design Charette process with 8 of Perth’s best urban designers.

Two of the best examples are featured in this report. Incorporating the lessons learnt from the design testing, a precinct-wide design approach was applied to the site on the Ranford Street corridor to demonstrate a hypothetical growth study highlighting the benefits of urban infill and regeneration.

This report also demonstrates – for the first time in Perth – the most comprehensive analysis of the economic e benefits of urban regeneration and infill development, compared with business as usual.  Specifically, infrastructure cost savings, improved liveability and city productivity are measured. The report then expands on these benefits by analysing the benefits of coordinated precinct-scale urban regeneration infill versus business as usual ad-hoc infill we are seeing in Perth right now.
