DA Report has the NT on topThe recent Development Assessment report that was released by the Property Council sees the NT continuing to outperform the other states and Territory in the adoption of assessment principles. Already recognised for its relatively simple DA process, a key highlight has been the introduction of the Planning Commission in 2013. The NT Planning Commission should provide for short, medium and long term planning certainty and identify key tangible infrastructure targets. The benefits of the current planning system offer certainty. All business, especially those involved in property, require a high level of certainty in order to undertake key investment decisions. While the NT may be top of the class at the moment, the work isn’t done. Planning reform is a constant challenge and the NT needs clear strategic direction that gives both the industry and community certainty about where development will happen in the future and what it should look like.As the Northern Territory continues to grow, it is critical that the government continues to further develop strategic plans and local area plans. In addition to a series of state and territory based reforms, the report puts forward five key recommendations for reform, including:Zone more land for housing in inner, middle and outer ring suburbsSimpler planning systems and faster less politicised processesLess taxes on the production of new housing to lower prices for purchasersLink housing and jobs through new infrastructure and ensure new projects are accompanied by a housing and renewal growth plan Incentivise reform through federal leadership
