Council plans to make Perth energy resilientThe City of Perth has announced that it will safeguard the city against climate change and the impacts of rising energy demands with an initiative called Towards an Energy Resilient City. The initiative, which is outlined in its Towards an Energy Resilient City Strategic Directions Paper, offers a number of recommendations for achieving citywide energy resilience. They include strategies for energy efficiency, renewable energy and transport that can help the City of Perth achieve a 32 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2031 (against business-as-usual emissions) and a 20 per cent reduction in the City’s operations emissions by 2020 (set against a 2011/12 baseline). The initiative sets out the City of Perth’s aspiration to achieve the Perth community’s 2029+ Vision of a city recognised globally as ‘vibrant, accessible, affordable and sustainable’. The City intends to implement its recommendations alongside its Energy Resilient City Policy, which directs the City’s energy resilience actions towards its own operations and assets, and the roles it can take to facilitate and support energy resilience actions in the community.Towards an Energy Resilient City has been endorsed by Council and by Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi, who says she is confident the City of Perth can take a lead role in guiding the Western Australian capital to be more energy-resilient.”In taking a leadership role to reduce our energy consumption, become more sustainable and use renewable energy where possible, the City of Perth encourages residents and businesses to take their own action to lower greenhouse gas emissions,” said Scaffidi. The City now plans to share its analysis with key stakeholders in order to identify opportunities to collaborate on developing actions plans that meet the objectives of the Towards an Energy Resilient City Strategic Directions Paper. To download a copy of the Strategic Directions Paper, go to: http://www.perth.wa.gov.au/sites/default/files/City%20of%20Perth%20Energy%20Resilience%20Strategic%20Direction.pdf
