Construction on Campus II

On Tuesday 14 March, the Property Council held its second ‘Construction on Campus’ breakfast, exploring some of the major projects being undertaken on Queensland’s university campuses to expand and reshape their physical structures and cater for the ever-changing needs of their students and staff.

Three unique perspectives were provided by individuals working to reshape some of Queensland’s fastest growing universities.

Hilary Kavanagh, Director – Estate Directorate at James Cook University, outlined how JCU’s Townsville campus has a suburban context that poses many challenges for master planning and connectivity. Many sizeable upgrades are in the pipeline as the University looks to densify its campus and meet growing demand. The University is also looking at the feasibility of opening up its land bank to residential development.

Prof. Jim Nyland, Associate Vice-Chancellor (Brisbane), Australian Catholic University, described the ACU campus as the fastest growing university campus in Queensland. The campus master plan has already helped shape the delivery of new award-winning projects, creating new attractors for potential staff and students.

Urbis Director Stephanie Wyeth offered insights into the work Urbis has undertaken in the recently released University of Queensland St Lucia campus draft master plan. The master plan’s vision is for “a community of innovators, in a riverside garden, in a city,” with a greater focus on connectivity to surrounding areas, and improved green space.

Dr Lyndall Bryant, Head of College & CEO – The Women’s College at UQ, moderated a panel session which delved into issues as diverse as the impact of improved technological offerings on the physical campus, and the specialities of each university offering.

The Property Council thanks RCP for their sponsorship of the Property Industry Breakfast series, and our panel members and moderator for providing their perspectives on this important industry sector.
