Construction on Campus

More than 280 people attended the Property Council’s latest Downtown Breakfast – Construction on Campus – to understand how Brisbane’s major universities are being transformed.

With student numbers increasing and universities becoming more integrated with local communities, our guest speakers Alan Egan, Director, Property & Facilities Division – University of Queensland, Andrew Frowd, Director, Facilities Management Queensland University of Technology, and Nicola Collier- Jackson, Director, Directorate, Campus Life Administration – Griffith University, spoke about the challenges and exciting projects that are being delivered on campus.

Kicking off the presentations was Alan Egan, who spoke about the economic contribution that universities provide to Brisbane, including the contribution of the 11,000 international students that attend the University of Queensland. Alan explained that the biggest challenge for universities was physical growth and the constraint of land to allow campuses to grow.

Andrew Frowd spoke about how traditionally campuses’ were closed, however this is now changing to an open style allowing the general public to access the campuses facilities. Changes are also being triggered by new methods of teaching and the requirement for formal and informal learning spaces.

Rounding out the presentations was Nicola Collier – Jackson, who outlined the alterations that are occurring due to the rapid change in technology. The demands of students are driving this change, and to stay competitive, campuses need to cater for these needs by delivering spaces that are adaptive.

Following the presentations our guest speakers were welcomed back to the stage for a panel discussion moderated by Ross Elliott, Business Advisor and Industry Observer. Topics that were covered during the session were digital disruption, integrating local communities with campuses, and the appetite of universities to purchase office accommodation in the CBD.

The Property Council would sincerely like to thank our guest speakers Alan Egan, Andrew Frowd and Nicola Collier- Jackson, along with our moderator Ross Elliott. A special thanks must also go to our Downtown Breakfast series sponsor Dexus, and our supporting sponsor for this event Kane.
