Collaborating for the Gold Coast

Infrastructure, the economy and future planning were the key issues discussed at the Property Council’s inaugural ‘Collaborating for the Gold Coast’ luncheon held on Friday the 2nd of October.

The event provided the opportunity to hear from the three levels of government represented by, the Hon Steven Ciobo MP, Federal Minister for International Development and The Pacific, John-Paul Langbroek, Deputy State Opposition Leader and Shadow Treasurer and Shadow Minister for the Commonwealth Games, along with Councillor Cameron Caldwell, Chair City Planning Committee, City of Gold Coast.

Proceedings commenced with moderator Catherine Webber, Editor – Gold Coast Bulletin introducing each of the guest speakers and asking each of them to provide a short introduction about the economy and issues affecting the property industry on the Gold Coast.

Councillor Caldwell kicked off the discussion by explaining that the Council had introduced the Construction Kickstart discount on infrastructure charges to assist the property industry and to get the economy moving on the Gold Coast.  Secondly, he spoke about the new City Plan and how it will facilitate development development, when it is approved by the Queensland Government.

Following on from Cr Caldwell was Mr Langbroek who spoke about the LNP’s time in Government, and how they secured funds for the upgrade of the M1, fixed the funding shortfall that existed for the Commonwealth Games, and introduced tough laws against criminal motorcycle gangs.

Attention then turned to the Hon Steven Ciobo, who informed the audience of Prime Minister Turnbull’s appetite for funding public infrastructure, with Light Rail Stage 2 on the agenda. Continuing on the theme of infrastructure he spoke about the Federal Government’s record investment in infrastructure of $125 billion across Australia.

The panel was then asked a series of questions from the moderator and members of the audience.  The questions focused on the economy, infrastructure funding and planning for the growth of the Gold Coast.

The Property Council would like to thank the Hon Steven Ciobo MP, John-Paul Langbroek MP and Councillor Cameron Caldwell for taking the time to speak at the event.  Special thanks must also go to our moderator Catherine Webber and to the sponsor for the event Rider Levett Bucknall.
