Collaborating for the Gold Coast

The Property Council’s second annual ‘Collaborating for the Gold Coast’ event brought together representatives from the three levels of government to discuss their perspectives on the region’s future.

The discussion, moderated by Property Council Deputy Executive Director – Jen Williams, brought out an entertaining – and occasionally fiery – exchange between the three elected representatives.

Cr Cameron Caldwell, Chair of City Planning for the City of Gold Coast , outlined the need to be proactive to capitalise on the upcoming Commonwealth Games to make the Gold Coast a world class city. Cr Caldwell took the opportunity to state his opposition to value-capture funding mechanisms, expressing that the term was a clever way to “hide a new tax behind some buzz words.” On the vexed issue of housing supply, Cr Caldwell expressed that he was open to more greenfield land being approved “where possible and appropriate.”

John-Paul Langbroek MP, Member for Surfers Paradise, took aim at the State Government over their new draft SEQ Regional Plan outlining perceived inconsistencies in their approach to infill development. Mr Langbroek outlined that law and order issues and the Gold Coast cruise ship terminal remain major issues for his electorate.

Bert van Manen MP, Member for Forde, outlined that housing affordability was a key concern for his electorate. Mr van Manen supported the Federal Government’s proposed model for incentivising the release of greenfield land through the development of more efficient state planning systems.

The Property Council would like to thank lunch sponsor, Rider Levett Bucknall, and the three representatives for sharing their insights.
