City of Perth Rate Hike AngerA proposed 7.7 per cent rate hike for commercial offices angers sector. The City of Perth Council has approved a 7.7 per cent rate rise for commercial office properties and a 4.53 per cent rise for residential rates. The Property Council has been vocal in its opposition to this move, which is believed to be in response to budget shortfalls elsewhere. In an interview with The West, Executive Director Joe Lenzo said “This is bad for Perth, bad for jobs and for the people who work in the city.””While things were bubbling along and buildings were full and rents were reasonable, rate rises have been accepted, but I think the City of Perth should be a bit more cognisant of the conditions.””The solution is not to lift office rates by 7.7 per cent, but to take a leaf out of the City of Adelaide for instance, which last week announced there would be a freeze on CBD rates because of the economic conditions.”The Property Council is engaging with the City of Perth to advocate against this hike.
