City of Darwin CBD Summit
This Thursday, representatives from the Property Council along with the City of Darwin, Northern Territory Government, Retailer’s Association, Tourism, Chamber of Commerce and Hotel owners will be attending the CBD Summit hosted by the Lord Mayor, Katrina Fong Lim.
We have long advocated the need for Darwin to remain the primary entertainment and employment hub. We need a well performing city centre to ensure our economy continues to grow.
The Summit is designed to address the issues to the key stakeholders about the lack of business confidence in the City.
We need to improve the business conditions and confidence of the Darwin CBD to ensure we have a well performing city centre, we need formal commitments by the government to improve the amenities and infrastructure and this can easily be achieved by immediately commencing work on the projects identified as ‘critical’ the Darwin City Centre Mater Plan and also increasing the tourism related amenities and facilities like the construction of a World Class Aboriginal Art gallery.
Along with these critical projects; we need to re-establish the Darwin Capital City Committee and see NT Government policy announced to increase employment in the CBD.
The NT Government needs to formally commit to an annual infrastructure budget for the CBD, over the last term; we have not seen any investment by the NT Government injected into our city. We know that the economic and social health of Darwin’s CBD is the responsibility of all of us and that we need to show leadership in progressing solutions to improve our CBD.
We will be holding a City Centres Committee meeting ahead of the summit to ensure we have 3 highlighted key issues that affect the property industry in the current economic climate.
