Buildings Materials compliance seminar

The Property Council was pleased to provide the opportunity for members to increase their understanding of building materials compliance at a breakfast seminar on Tuesday 5 September.

The event, sponsored by Kingspan, brought together the Queensland Building and Construction Commission and industry leaders from the Society of Fire Safety – Engineers Australia, Insurance Council of Australia, Insulation Australasia, and law firm DLA Piper. Presenters spoke to fire and performance risks of non-compliant or conformant building materials, recent regulatory changes, as well as third party certification processes.

Attendees were pleased to hear from Brett Bassett, Commissioner – Queensland Building and Construction Commission, Scott Gibson, Chairman – Insulation Australia and Lauri Ratz, Special Risks Manager – Insurance Council of Australia. Following the presentations Natasha Stojanovich, Senior Associate -Litigation & Dispute Resolution – DLA Piper, joined the others for a panel discussion and  moderated Q&A session.

Recent months have seen wide ranging action from governments, regulatory bodies and the private sector to address the serious issue of non conforming products. Last month the Queensland Government passed legislation addressing NCBPs and the Australian Building Codes Board released an out-of-cycle amendment for the National Construction Code. The Property Council’s position in support of strong collaboration with industry to resolve these issues can be found here.
