Builder contract awarded for West Franklin

Greaton awarded Built Environs a contract valued at over $90 million to build stage one in West Franklin, which is one of the largest urban regeneration projects ever undertaken in the Adelaide CBD.

Over 2,000 construction jobs will be generated during stage one (2 years plus duration), with over seventy subcontracting firms employed.

The first stage of West Franklin is located on the corner of Elizabeth and Franklin Streets and features 272 residential apartments spread across two towers (north tower is 20 storeys and the south tower is 18 storeys). They both share a common podium comprising 1,100 sqm of retail on the ground level, resident facilities and car parking (236 spaces). Residential facilities include a 20 metre lap pool, gym, spa, sauna, resident dining rooms, BBQ facilities, cinema, golf simulator and roof top bar.

Nicho Teng, Managing Director of Greaton comments, “West Franklin is Greaton’s first major residential project in Australia. The company purchased the site from Adelaide City Council in 2014 and knew it had the potential to dramatically change Adelaide’s City West. Appointing the builder is a major milestone for the project. Greaton is pleased to partner with one of Adelaide’s reputable builders to build this significant development.

“Built Environs is committed to safety, innovation and best practice building principles, backed by a strong parent company – McConnell Dowell Group which made them an obvious choice to build West Franklin. They will also be using innovative construction methodology – bubble deck which will result in a shorter construction phase.”

He added, “Greaton is committed to creating job opportunities for local people and businesses. It is an exciting time for the company to help generate thousands of jobs to stimulate the local economy.

“The 5,000 sqm West Franklin site was previously the home of Balfours, an iconic South Australian bakery. This area of the city has been dormant for many years. The commencement of construction in this area will not only activate West Franklin, but the entire precinct.”

Built Environs Managing Director, Daryl Young, “Securing the West Franklin project is an important achievement for our business and provides a great opportunity to partner with Greaton to deliver a significant development. What a fantastic way to commemorate our 30th year operating in Adelaide.”

The $300 million West Franklin masterplanned development will create an entirely new destination within Adelaide’s City West. Situated on the corner of Franklin, Elizabeth and Morphett Streets, the lifestyle precinct represents the future of living in Adelaide and comprises 560 luxurious apartments and penthouses spread across four iconic towers.

Local Adelaide architects Brown Falconer led the exterior design and interior fit-out. The urban village precinct has been designed to meld with the historic fabric of the site. Its stylish glass, metal and stone exteriors are designed for the 21st century.

Construction is expected to start in April and stage one is due to be completed early 2019. Over 140 sales have been secured in stage one.
