Brisbane Airport takes offThe second event in the Property Council’s 2015 Tourism Series proved the Brisbane Airport Master Plan is a blueprint for more than just a new runway. The future of the Airport precinct was unveiled by Roel Hellemons, General Manager – Strategic Planning and Development – Brisbane Airport Corporation and Anthony Flynn, Managing Director – Flynn Property Group, who provided an outline of the opportunities for the tourism sector that would stem from the Master Plan.Roel began proceedings by explaining Brisbane Airport Corporation’s vision of becoming the ‘preferred gateway to Australia’ and detailing how the recently approved Master Plan will help to achieve this goal over the next 20 years. Roel outlined the $3.8 billion construction and investment pipeline for Brisbane Airport, which is set to provide nearly 00 construction jobs and contribute $3.3 billion to the Queensland economy. Connectivity is a key element of the Airport’s strategy and was a theme for Roel’s presentation. This included Brisbane’s connectivity with other world cities, connectivity with regional destinations and connectivity at the airport – through internal transfers and people movement. Anthony, who has had an ongoing relationship with Brisbane Airport through the Novotel Brisbane Airport, brought his unique development perspective to the discussion. The presentation primarily focused on Flynn Property Group’s upcoming $1 million development which features two hotels and a conference centre within the boundaries of the Master Plan. Anthony also discussed the current opportunities in the market for greater hotel stock around the airport, particularly in the ‘5 star’ bracket and the shortage of conference facilities in Brisbane. Anthony and Roel also participated in a panel discussion, moderated by the Property Council’s Deputy Executive Director, Jen Williams. The panel focused on a range of issues, from infrastructure charging frameworks and delivery responsibility within Brisbane Airport, to the importance of Brisbane’s status as a no curfew airport, and the choices between franchise and management hotel models. Thanks must go to Roel and Anthony for taking their time to address the property industry. Thanks must also go to our sponsors and hosts HopgoodGanim Lawyers without whose support this event would not be possible.
