Blurring the lines – retirement villages and aged care

The Property Council’s first Retirement Living breakfast for 2015 explored the changing dynamic of retirement villages and their ability to cater for aged care requirements. Attendees heard first-hand how the provision of aged care is increasingly becoming an expectation from residents who live in retirement villages.

Key note speaker, Catherine Wells, O’Hara Wells Aged Care Industry Consultants, outlined the challenges and opportunities that will arise as a result of the Federal Government’s ‘my aged care’ reform.

Catherine explained the need for operators to form partnerships with care providers, to service the varying health requirements of residents within villages.

Kim Teudt, General Manager, Acquisitions and Business Growth- Churches of Christ, and Tim Russell, Chief Executive Officer- Retire Australia, joined Catherine for a panel discussion moderated by Penny Eden, Special Counsel, Minter Ellison.

The discussion explored the issues that were raised by Catherine in her presentation, with Tim commenting that residents are more concerned about their future care needs than issues concerning the maintenance of the tennis court.

In response to a question from the audience about the changing design of villages, Kim Teudt said that the Churches of Christ planned and delivered integrated communities that would facilitate the anticipated changes to meet future demands.

The Property Council would like to sincerely thank Catherine Wells for providing the key note address, and our thanks is extended to our panel members, along with Penny Eden for moderating the discussion. Special thanks must also go to our host Minter Ellison, and sponsor Broad; without the support of these organisations the Retirement Living breakfast series would not be possible.
