Bipartisan commitment to planning reform welcomed

Over the past fortnight Queenslanders have seen both major political parties acknowledge that reform is needed to Queensland’s planning and development assessment system to create prosperity and improve housing affordability across Queensland.

On Monday, 25 May the Queensland Government released the Better Planning for Queensland directions paper.

The directions paper articulates Government’s planning reform agenda, and provides a commitment to extensive consultation with all interested stakeholders.

On Thursday 4 June, the Queensland Opposition introduced new planning legislation into the Parliament that was developed following 18 months of consultation during their time in office.

The legislation was introduced by the Shadow Minister for Infrastructure, Planning, Small Business, Employment and Trade, Tim Nicholls MP as a Private Member’s Bill and largely mirrors the LNP’s Planning and Development Bill which lapsed before Parliamentary Committee in January 2015.

The legislation has been submitted to the Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources Committee. The Committee’s current inquiries can be seen here.

The Property Council looks forward to working with all stakeholders to achieve our shared goal of creating Australia’s best planning and development assessment system.
