Behind the goats cheese curtain
The Property Council’s annual market outlook with Bernard Salt, Partner – KPMG is always a highlight event of the first quarter, and despite the oncoming cyclone Marcia, 2015 was no different.
The market outlook was the Property Council’s first sold out event of 2015 with nearly 5 property professionals attending to hear Bernard’s take on the cultural shifts in Queensland and Australia, and how this may translate to the property sector over the next 12 months.
It was good news for property in the Sunshine State as Bernard announced more scope for property growth and development in Queensland than any other state based on population assumptions.
Bernard also described the shift in the Australian economy towards knowledge workers, and the resultant cultural divide (a ‘goats cheese curtain’) between the inner and outer suburbs in metropolitan Australia.
In summing up, Bernard announced his top reasons to be positive about 2015, which included; strong population growth to drive housing, infrastructure and retail, the low Australian dollar to support manufacturing and agribusiness and low petrol prices which encourage domestic tourism.
Bernard was then joined by Carolyn Viney, CEO – Grocon and Glen Wright, CEO – Wright Property for a moderated panel session.
The panel discussed each of the key industry sectors, particularly inner-ring apartments and commercial property, assessing the opportunities for each at a national, and local level. Questions also focused on the impact in the change of State Government, building conversion in the CBD and the future of foreign investment in Brisbane.
The Property Council would like to thank Bernard Salt, Carolyn Viney and Glen Wright for their time and for traveling in inclement weather to ensure they made the event. Special thanks must go to our major sponsors Charter Hall and supporting sponsors Ray White Commercial, without whose support this event would not be possible.
