Be a part of the Residents in Action Trial!
Curtin University is offering Retirement Living Villages and their residents the opportunity to participate in ground breaking research into activity levels of seniors and how this effects their overall health.
The study seeks to test sustainable ways of promoting walking, reducing sitting and improving mental health in older adults in retirement villages who are currently not engaging in sufficient levels of physical activity (according to the health recommendations). Funding for this study has been granted by the ‘West Australian Health Promotion Foundation’ (HealthWay), with study partners including COTA WA and Amana Living. The team of researchers consists of:
Curtin University: Associate-Professor Cecilie Thøgersen-Ntoumani; Professor Nikos Ntoumanis; Professor Keith Hill; Dr Elissa Burton; Miss Ashlene Wright
Australian Catholic University (Melbourne) – Professor Ester Cerin
Victoria University – Professor Stuart Biddle
What is the Study About?
Physical activity is critical to help people remain healthy and independent, and becomes increasingly important as we age. Many physical activity programs are offered and have been evaluated via research but few of these are attractive to people who are not currently taking part in the recommended levels of physical activity. This research project will evaluate the effects of a free 16-week group-based walking program led by resident walking ambassadors (who will be trained by us) on walking, sitting and mental health outcomes. It is expected that the outcomes of the research will contribute to knowledge about effective ways of promoting physical activity, health and well-being for people residing in retirement villages.
