New research by the Australian Research Council (ARC) Centre of Excellence in Population Ageing Research (CEPAR) released last week found the population of Australians aged 65+ is projected to grow by 54 per cent between last year’s ABS 2021 Census and 2041.

Based on updated population estimates incorporating 2021 Census results, CEPAR Principal Research Fellow, Dr Tom Wilson said Australia’s population in all age groups was expected to grow, but the largest proportional growth rate was for the oldest age groups.

According to ARC-CEPAR research: Australia’s population aged 65 and over is projected to grow to 6.66 million by 2041, from an estimated 4.31 million in 2021 (ie, 54 per cent); the 85+ population is projected to rise from 534,000 in 2021 to 1.28 million by 2014 (an increase of 747,000 or 140 per cent); and the centenarian population is projected to increase from 5,300 in 2021 to 15,900 by 2041 (an increase of 10,600 or 200 per cent).
