At Last – Density, Jobs And Transport In New Perth Plan
Increased density, the location of new jobs and moving people are the key issues that the Property Council will take up in responding to the State Government’s new growth plan for Perth.
The State Government has responded to criticism about Perth’s low rate of infill development by unveiling a new plan to guide the city’s growth to 3.5 million people by mid-century.
The State Government’s Perth and [email protected] plan provides a platform to support the increased density of Perth.
Joe Lenzo, Property Council of Australia Executive Director, said “There can be no doubt that as the population of Perth grows, more and more people need to be able to live within the existing metropolitan area.”
“If planning and development approvals continue in Perth following the business-as-usual pattern, it simply will not be possible to house an extra 1.5 million people without pushing the boundaries even further out.”
“Enabling density and infill development creates vibrant and attractive urban communities, with the amenities people associate with great, liveable places.”
“We need to make better use of existing infrastructure by building up and not only out.”
“It is crucial that these plans are backed up with Government action to ensure that its targets are met.”
“Only by the State Government taking an active lead can we be certain that Perth will grow in a more compact and sustainable way. This plan is an important step in that direction.”
The Property Council will be consulting widely, including members and stakeholders, to ensure that the Government clearly understands the industry’s priorities in the new city plan.
