Astra Aerolab coming to Newcastle Airport
Newcastle Airport is a step closer to the realisation of Astra Aerolab – a major commercial precinct on its adjacent land, following the announcement of $11.7 million in funding by NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro this week.
Provided through the Growing Local Economies Program, the grant will enable Newcastle Airport to kickstart development of Astra Aerolab which will be a nationally significant precinct for defence, aerospace and advanced manufacturing research, manufacturing and businesses, set to generate over 5,0 jobs in the Hunter region.
The investment will secure 76 hectares of special land committed to defence and aviation-related industry and employment. Astra Aerolab will also house maintenance and support services for Australian fighter jets and drive $246 million into the NSW economy.
Newcastle Airport CEO Dr Peter Cock said the funding allows work to start on the development that will grow the region’s profile, create jobs, drive trade and business, and enhance education and community outcomes.
“As a community owned asset, Newcastle Airport takes its role in generating economic and social outcomes seriously. We want to create a precinct that fuels pride as well as growth – a place where people and businesses want to work. In the Hunter, Astra Aerolab, adjacent to Newcastle Airport, RAAF Base Williamtown, and coupled with our unbeatable lifestyle will do just that,” Dr Cock said.
Property Council Regional Director for the Hunter, Anita Hugo said that this is a welcome investment in infrastructure and will be important in driving growth across the region.
“The Hunter is home to a large number of defence and advanced manufacturing capabilities and the commercial precinct will provide an important hub for defence, aerospace and related industries.
“This ultimately means more jobs, a greater regional profile, and improved outcomes across related education, research and business growth in our region,” Anita said.
