Architect announced for Walsh Bay Arts Precinct
Sydney architectural firm Tonkin Zulaikha Greer has been selected to lead the design of the new $139 million Walsh Bay Arts Precinct, which obtained conceptual approval in May last year.
Tonkin Zulaikha Greer has worked on the refurbishment of Customs House and Carriageworks. They will be responsible for coordinating the design across the Walsh Bay Arts Precinct. This will involve new and refurbished performance and rehearsal spaces, offices, workshops, food and retail outlets including restaurants and bars, and a new public square.
Long-term commitments to the redeveloped Walsh Bay Arts Precinct have been made by:
- The Australian Chamber Orchestra
- Bangarra Dance Theatre
- Australian Theatre for Young People
- Bell Shakespeare
- Sydney Dance Company
- Sydney Philharmonia and Gondwana Choirs
The companies will work together to activate the precinct, alongside the Sydney Theatre Company.
The NSW Government has set aside $139 million for Walsh Bay’s renewal. A detailed State
Significant Development Application is expected to be lodged by the end of this year and if it is approved, construction is expected to begin in 2017.
