Annual Treasurer’s Address
In his last major speech prior to delivering his first budget, the Hon Curtis Pitt MP provided the annual Treasurer’s address to more than 280 people, at the Property Council’s Downtown Lunch.
The Treasurer outlined that the budget, to be handed down on 14 July, will be responsible and measured, while delivering on the commitments made during the election campaign.
As the economy transitions from the highs of the mining industry, the Treasurer held the property industry up as the shining light of the Queensland economy, and explained that the Government is unashamedly pro-growth and jobs.
The challenges surrounding the budget include revenue write downs for mining royalties of $2.8 billion, along with the severe effects of drought that continue to cripple the majority of the state. However, a positive sign for the property industry was the Treasurer’s confirmation that there will be no changes to the First Home Owner Construction Grant.
The Treasurer spoke about the need for all levels of government to partner on public transport infrastructure projects, and discussed the importance of establishing Building Queensland.
Following the Treasurer’s address, Chris Mountford, Queensland Executive Director – Property Council of Australia facilitated a question and answer session that covered a number of topics, including national tax reform and the sale of government owned land.
The Property Council sincerely thanks the Treasurer for taking the time to address the industry so close to the budget being handed down. Special thanks must also go to our sponsor Turner & Townsend and supporting sponsor Ray White, without their support the Downtown Lunch series would not be possible.
