AMENDING QUEENSLAND’S LAND TAX RELIEF FRAMEWORK
The Property Council has written to the Queensland Treasurer seeking amendments to the application of land tax relief in Queensland.
The amendments aim to re-align the land tax relief package announced by the Queensland Government with the recently released Retail Shop Leases and Other Commercial Leases (COVID-19 Emergency Response) Regulation 2020.
The Property Council’s letter follows a previous letter to the Queensland Treasurer citing problems members had experienced in accessing the Government’s land tax relief package.
The Property Council proposes the following suggestions to the Queensland Government’s Land Tax relief framework:
- Extending the deadline for landowners to apply for land tax relief to September 30 2020 to enable landowners to determine the level of rent relief they need to provide to their tenants under the new commercial leasing regulation.
- Amend the conditions of land tax relief so landowners are only required to pass this relief on as rent relief, if tenants qualify under Queensland’s new commercial leasing regulation. In doing so, landowners will have a greater capacity to provide qualifying tenants with appropriate levels of relief.
