ACT property industry’s pulse shows confidence on the rise

A check of the ACT property sector’s pulse finds confidence is on the rise, according to the latest ANZ/Property Council Survey.

The survey for the September 2015 quarter finds new levels of optimism, with confidence growing by 30 points in the last year. This shift in positive sentiment is greater than in any other jurisdiction around Australia.

The local industry’s confidence index is now at 131 points, consistent with the national average and up from 119 in the previous quarter. A score of 100 is considered neutral.

“This survey takes the pulse of the property sector around the country, and confirms that our local industry is feeling good about the future, with slight increases in work schedule expectations and staffing levels bolstering confidence,” says Property Council ACT Executive Director, Catherine Carter.

The quarterly survey polled almost 1,800 property industry professionals across all Australian states and territories on their forward-looking views regarding the business and political environment, the economy, employment intentions and other factors.

“The industry’s expectations for the ACT’s house price growth and for economic growth – at both the national and local levels – are on the up. However, it’s not all good news and we can’t ignore the pessimism in the office, retail and industrial sectors,” Ms Carter says.

“This survey also acts as a lightning-rod for how government policies and programs are working and whether they are encouraging investment and development. The survey’s government performance index is still in negative territory in the ACT, with respondents slightly more pessimistic about the ACT Government’s growth management strategies than the national average.

“This will only change when real outcomes are delivered. This means creating supportive policies that help our industry do what it does best – create jobs, prosperity and strong communities for the people of the ACT,” Ms Carter concludes.
