3 Tiers of Townsville Luncheon
Infrastructure, the economy and future planning were the key issues discussed at the Property Council’s ‘Three Tiers of Townsville’ luncheon held on Friday 10 November.
The event provided the opportunity to hear from representatives from all three levels of government on the settings needed to create jobs and long term economic opportunities for the region.
Cathy O’Toole MP, kicked off the formal part of the lunch with a wide-ranging opening address that touched on many of the policies that a Federal Labor Government would introduce and opportunities that could be presented to Townsville, particularly from the Asian market.
Flying the flag for the Queensland Government, Scott Stewart MP spoke about the projects and funding that has been secured for the region. He highlighted the new stadium project, and the commitment to employ local contractors on key projects for the city.
Mayor Jenny Hill listed the implementation of the Townsville City Deal as an item that must continue to be a focus for all three levels of government. In addition, she spoke of the economic importance of the new hotel and student accommodation developments proposed for the stadium precinct.
The panel discussion, moderated by Damian Tomlinson, Deputy Editor- Townsville Bulletin, delved into the detail of the plans, policies and issues that impact on the property industry. These included the North Queensland Regional Plan, the revitalisation of the CBD, and establishment of a development entity.
The Property Council would like to thank Cathy O’Toole MP, Scott Stewart MP and Cr Jenny Hill for taking the time to speak at the event. Special thanks must also go to our moderator Damian, and to the sponsor for the event, Rider Levett Bucknall.
