2015 Annual Budget Breakdown
This year’s Property Council Budget Breakdown saw 130 people fill the room to listen to the Treasurer, the Hon. David Tollner delivery his budget speech and presentation.
The morning events gave guests the opportunity to ask questions from the floor in relation to the 2015/16 Northern Territory Budget.
On behalf of the Property Council of Australia NT Division and it’s members I would like to thank the Minister for taking the time to address us on budget matters that directly relate to the property industry.
“Budget week is always a hectic time for a Treasurer, but I was very happy to sit down with the Property Council’s local members for breakfast and a chat at the Convention Centre.
There was a great crowd at the event and I hope they came away feeling as confident about where the Territory is headed as I am.
This year’s Budget has seen us further repairing the $5.5bn black hole we faced in the Territory Government’s finances, while continuing to invest in schools, health and other public services.
We’ve also outlined a fully-funded $1.38bn program of vital infrastructure projects which will make life better for Territorians and strengthen our economy – the construction sector especially.
All the economic indicators for the Territory are looking good for the next few years and the positive pro-business Budget handed down by Treasurer Joe Hockey in Canberra should further boost confidence across Northern Australia.
There were some probing questions from the floor and I was delighted to assure members that the Territory Government has absolutely no plans to introduce a land tax here.
We’re only interested in making life simpler for business – not harder – and I also spoke about how we might change our planning process to ensure future development is more straightforward and in line with community expectations.
There’ll be more to say about this in the next few months.
For now, I’d just like to thank the Property Council and its members for my hot breakfast and warm welcome”.
