100-storey skyscraper approved for MelbourneThe Victorian Government has approved three new skyscrapers in central Melbourne, one of which will be the first 100-storey building in the Southern Hemisphere.Standing at 319m upon completion, the building – Australia 108 – will eclipse Melbourne’s Eureka Tower by 22m. It will also rise above the Gold Coast’s Q1 tower, which measures 323m with a spire, but only 275m without. The tower, which will be located at 70 Southbank Boulevard, will be built on land bought by World Class Land, a Singapore-based developer owned by Aspial. Architect for the project is Fender Katsalidis. The original design saw the tower reach 388m, but it was found to breach air safety regulations, forcing a redesign.Australia 108 will include more than 1100 luxury apartments, as well as retail and residential amenities, including a pool, sauna and cinema. The $900 million development is expected to deliver close to 6000 construction jobs, with construction commencing in mid-2015 for 2019 completion. The two other apartment towers given approval are a 75-storey tower at 452 Elizabeth Street and a 54-storey building at 90 Queensbridge Street at Southbank.
