Home Membership Recognition & Awards The Australian Property Hall of Fame Hall of Fame Inductees Testimonial from Peter Verwer, Former Chief Executive, Property Council of Australia

Ray Powys helped pioneer property as an asset class in Australia.

Ray Powys encountered an old fashioned real estate industry and left it as an investment platform that creates collective wealth for millions of Australians.

Ray believed in civic duty, in community service. His range of his interests were astounding. Ray helped place Macquarie University on a firm financial footing, he helped capitalise the CSIRO, he was a mayor of Burnie in his 20s, and he championed the interests of people with disabilities.

He helped form what is now the Australian Property Institute and, of course, the Property Council, where he was both an early National President and its first CEO.

Above all, Ray Powys was committed to an ethos of nation building and economic development. He saw growth as a defining characteristic of Australia’s national identity – as a pathway to helping Australians realise their own aspirations and define their own destiny.

The hallmarks of Ray’s character were his deep-seated integrity, his incredible optimism, his embrace of fresh ideas and his faith in young people.

Ray Powys was a pioneer, an industry legend and a very worthy inductee into the Australian Property Hall of Fame.
