WA Government Urged to Get Real About Strata Reform
The Property Council is calling on the WA Government to get on and introduce Strata Title reform after reported comments from the Government that reforms have been stalled.
Terry Redman, Minister for Lands, was reported in the media today stating that the “complex” reforms were now unlikely to be introduced into Parliament by the end of the year.
“After more than 5 years of industry and community consultation, we are witnessing more inaction on critical Strata Titles reform which is needed to promote housing affordability, sustainability and liveability,” said Property Council WA Executive Director Lino Iacomella.
“This is a major let-down for the industry but more importantly for communities that are crying out for urban development and regeneration to deliver excellent amenities and public space.”
“As recent as January this year the Minister issued a statement saying that Cabinet had approved the introduction of draft legislation into state Parliament to ensure prompt passage of the amendments to the Strata Titles Act in 2016. WA has been waiting too long for these reforms and is now 20 years behind the rest of the country.
“This is unacceptable and we expect the Government to fast track the process to bring the Strata Titles Act into the 21st century. Reforms, like the introduction of Community Titles, are essential to building strong communities and Keeping WA growing.”
The call for action comes as the Property Council ramps up its campaign to pressure the WA Government to urgently fast-track strata reform in WA and prevent current developments going on to the back burner.
