Visionary Gold Coast innovation precinct wins national property honour

One of Queensland’s largest coworking and innovation spaces received the RCP Award for Government Leadership at the 2021 Property Council of Australia / Rider Levett Bucknall Innovation and Excellence Awards in Sydney last night.

It is the second award for COHORT by Economic Development Queensland (Department of State Development, Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning), which was named Queensland State Development of the Year in July.

Property Council of Australia Chief Executive, Ken Morrison, said this was a particularly important year for the Awards to recognise the people, projects and pioneering innovation in Australian property development.

“After an incredibly challenging year, it has been an absolute pleasure to come together to celebrate the outstanding achievements in our industry,” Mr Morrison said.

“The Queensland Government, through Economic Development Queensland, sets a high standard for coworking precincts in Australia and is a worthy recipient of this prestigious award.”

Mr Morrison also congratulated Queensland’s ‘rising star’ Lisa Hinde, Head of Sustainability for Colliers Real Estate Management Services Australia, who won the ‘Bridge42 Award for Future Leader of the Year’.

Ms Hinde is a globally recognised sustainability leader within the built environment, credited with developing and guiding long term industry leading sustainability, health and wellbeing programs for over 3.5million m2 of real estate in Australia.

Property Council’s Queensland Executive Director, Jen Williams, said she was thrilled to see Queensland’s projects and people recognised for their contribution to the industry.

“COHORT’s design, intent and operational success has delivered an impressive coworking, innovation and laboratory space that connects entrepreneurs, start-ups and industry leaders under one roof,” Ms Williams said.

“This kind of innovation contributes to healthy and sustainable communities, and the advancement of home-grown talent – something Queensland has plenty of.”

Ms Williams said Bridge42 Award for Future Leader of the Year winner, Lisa Hinde, is testament to this.

“Through her hard work and passion for the industry, Lisa has made an extraordinary impact in her workplace and her communities,” Ms Williams said. “Her career achievements are a wonderful example of the talent and opportunities that exist in the property industry.”

RLB has sponsored the annual awards for the past 39 years. RLB Managing Director, Matt Long, congratulated the winners.

“Queensland continues to advance the frontiers of innovation and leadership and it is a credit to our industry to see our people and projects recognised,” Mr Long said.”RLB was proud to be involved in this project, helping visualise the former space comprising a rooftop bar and restaurant, multiple shopfronts and a police station into one of Queensland’s most vibrant innovation centres.”

COHORT opened in May 2019 in the heart of the 200-hectare Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct in Southport and has been expanded twice to meet demand to become one of the largest innovation spaces in Queensland.

In this time, it has accommodated more than 160 digital health professionals and start-up innovators that benefit from being co-located with founding partners and collaborators like Griffith Innovation Centre, Gold Coast University Hospital’s Digital Engagement Team, Institute of Glycomics and not-for-profit AI start-up IntelliHQ.

Its location in the former Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018) Athletes’ Village made it a key pillar of EDQ’s post-Games development strategy for its 9.5ha of developable area.

Creativity, connectedness and entrepreneurship is fostered through an integrated design approach that delivers private offices, co-working desks, bespoke tenancies, meeting rooms, event space, PC1/PC2 labs, kitchen, end-of-trip facilities, podcast studio and boardroom.
