VICTORIANS ON THE MOVE – TO OTHER STATES
Population data released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows Victorians are continuing to leave the state in droves as it suffers from the effects of prolonged lockdowns during COVID.
Victorian Executive Director of the Property Council of Australia Danni Hunter said: “The story of the pandemic has been closed borders, but today’s population data shows that the population issue is about more than just negative overseas migration and closed international borders.
“Following months of lockdowns and upheaval for business and families, Victorians are making the move to other states in droves. We have gone from leading the country in population growth to last place, with Victoria losing 30,700 people since March last year.
“Victorians are on the move and Victoria is no longer the place to be. We’ve seen it across our state with the devastating impact on business, families, jobs and our CBD and Victorians are voting with their feet.
“Our population growth has driven our economic growth in Victoria for many years and if we are unable to turn around our population growth rate, our post-pandemic economic recovery will be jeopardised.
“When Victoria’s population rose by 142,218 in 2017, our economy grew 3.8% for the 2016-2017 financial year. Similarly, the last time Victorians left in large numbers the Victorian economy went into recession in the early 1990s. Population growth equals economic growth and greater prosperity for all Victorians.
“The Victorian Government needs to set a clear course for our economic recovery and how we make Melbourne and Victoria the best place to work and live in Australia once again.
“We simply can’t let our city, and our state languish and fall to the bottom of the pack. We are Victorians – we are proud of our state, proud of our city and we want a better future for our community.
“Victoria has to act now to make sure we don’t waste what we have worked so hard to achieve over the past decades of positive growth.
“Population growth has to be a key part of our economic recovery story. Government and business alike has to take action to keep people here and turn this population disaster around.”
