Victorian stars shine at national property awards
The world’s most sustainable shopping centre, the redevelopment of Australia’s oldest library and an Indigenous company that champions diversity are among the seven Victorian winners at Australia’s most prestigious property awards.
The coveted Rider Levett Bucknall Australian Development of the Year 2021 was award to Frasers Property Australia for its Burwood Bricks Shopping Centre, which also took out the Landcom Award for Best Sustainable Development – New Buildings and Hames Sharley Award for Best Shopping Centre Development at the Property Council of Australia / Rider Levett Bucknall Innovation and Excellence Awards in Sydney this evening.
Property Council of Australia Chief Executive, Ken Morrison, said the extraordinary sustainability of this development has set a new global standard.
“The world-leading design and development approach to achieve self-sufficiency and regenerative benefits is truly worthy of our top honour,” Mr Morrison said.
“To have a building open to the whole community that produces more energy than it consumes, captures and re-uses all its water needs, and has a net positive waste impact has redefined sustainability in retail.”
Designed by NH Architecture and delivered by Hacer Group, Burwood Brickworks Shopping Centre was completed in December 2019. The centre, which is self-sufficient and has Australia’s first shopping centre rooftop urban farm, was also awarded Australia’s Best Sustainable Development – New Buildings and Best Shopping Centre Development for 2021.
“This is a visionary development with an ambitious goal to operate as a Living Building Challenge® certified retail centre incorporating natural power, organic waste re-purposing, on-site water treatment, and agriculture,” Mr Morrison said.
“The meticulous planning, education and oversight required for the project, including unprecedented collaboration with tenants willing to alter operations, fitouts and supply chains to meet such stringent sustainability criteria is a feat well worth recognising.”
RLB has partnered with the Property Council to present the awards program for nearly 40 years. This year, 120 finalists competed across 19 award categories.
RLB Managing Director Tony Moleta congratulated Frasers Property Australia for showcasing visionary, adaptive design, long-term sustainable outcomes, and inclusive planning at Burwood Bricks.
“The calibre of this development is unparalleled and a testament to the enduring value that sustainable, forward-thinking design brings to our communities,” Tony said.
This year, Victorian projects took out a total of seven of the 19 categories in the Awards.
Property Council of Australia Victoria Executive Director, Danni Hunter, said she was proud of the collective efforts of the local industry.
“We’ve seen a clear commitment to innovation, sustainability and diversity throughout our cities and communities, and this has been reflected in tonight’s Awards,” she said.
Redevelopment works at the State Library Victoria were recognised in two categories. Development Victoria was awarded the S4B Award for Best Heritage Development for its complex heritage restorations across the library, while Built’s Vision 2020 Redevelopment won the Woods Bagot Award for Best Public Building, transforming Australia’s oldest and busiest public library while maintaining library operations across all works.
ClarkeHopkinsClarke’s Lt. Miller & Nightingale Brunswick East co-located projects won the Parkview Award for Best Residential Development.
“These aspirational, urban infill projects have transformed an active petrol station site into a 100% fossil-fuel-free community, creating two of Victoria’s most sustainable residential communities,” Ms Hunter said.
Meanwhile, GJK Facility Services & GJK Indigenous Solutions was awarded the FDC Award for Diversity for more than 2 employees for its achievements in creating diversity in the property sector.
“GJKFS and GJKIS have shown what it takes to create an inclusive workplace, and the widespread benefits are evident in the success and sustainability of GJKIS as an Indigenous Controlled Business,” said Ms Hunter.
