VICTORIAN CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY HIT BY NEW RESTRICTIONS

Premier Daniel Andrews has announced construction sites will now have strict worker limitations as part of a range of tightened restrictions to apply from midnight tonight.

At large scale construction sites, staffing must reduce to 25 per cent or five workers on site, whichever is higher, while a maximum of five workers will be permitted on smaller construction sites as part of the new restrictions.

Property Council of Australia’s Victorian Executive Director Danni Hunter said: “It’s disappointing for the construction industry and the thousands of people who won’t be able to go to work.

“One in four working Victorians works in the property and construction sector. This shut down will be very detrimental to the livelihoods and mental health for thousands of Victorians and Victorian jobs when we can least afford it.

“The construction industry has proven time and time again that its commitment to COVID-safety is world-class. Its culture of compliance and ability to fully mitigate the risk of COVID stops its spread on worksites has kept the community safe.

“As soon as it is possible, construction needs to be reopened. In the meantime we will continue to deliver excellence in COVID-safety on worksites to keep our people and the community safe.

“Most importantly, we encourage all of those in the construction sector who may not be able to work during this period, to get their vaccine if they are able to. More jabs means more jobs and is the only pathway out of lockdowns.”
