Urban renewal and place-making insights from NYC

Lessons for Australia in place-making and urban renewal will be the focus of a week-long visit to New York by representatives of the Australian property industry.

The inaugural New York City Study Tour hosted by the Property Council of Australia from 21-27 July involves a number of briefings, discussion and site visits to landmark urban renewal and development projects around New York City.

More than 40 participants from across the Australian property industry are joining the study tour.

“At a time of rapid growth for Australia’s major cities and increasing public debate around urban density and amenity, this study tour is a brilliant opportunity to learn from some of the best in the business,” said Ken Morrison, Chief Executive of the Property Council of Australia.

“There are plenty of lessons to be learned from around the world – including New York – on how to deliver good growth for the economic and social  benefit of all Australians,” Mr Morrison said.

Highlights of the study tour program include:

  • Briefing by Carl Weisbrod, former Chair of the NYC Planning Commission and Director of NYC Department of Planning

  • Insights into the US property market and NY sub-markets, including urban renewal trends

  • Site tours of new projects and precincts including 1 Vanderbilt, Hudson Yards, Pacific Park Brooklyn, One World Trade Centre, Oculus Transport Hub, Brookfield Place, Manhattan West,  AND Essex Street Crossing

  • Neighbourhood development insights, including DUMBO and the High Line project

  • Briefing on lessons for Australia from urban renewal in New York

  • Panel discussion on innovation and technology in the property industry

Mr Morrison said the study tour program included a strong focus on how business and government could work together along with the community to create and promote urban renewal and place-making opportunities.

“For example, the Times Square Alliance has played a vital role in the transformation of this iconic precinct for locals and visitors alike, by bringing together local businesses, government and the community on planning, economic development and events management,” Mr Morrison said.

The New York study tour follows the recent release of the Creating Great Australian Cities project by the Property Council which included several recommendations on how Australian cities could prosper in the ‘metropolitan century.’

“Great cities of the world such as New York have their own distinctive features and history which have shaped their development, but there is also a lot we can learn from their experience as we look at how we create great cities for Australians,” Mr Morrison said.
