Time to transform NSWThe Baird Government’s re-election opens the door to an infrastructure boom, modern local government and a better planning system, according to the Property Council of Australia. The Property Council’s members finance, own and develop major commercial office, retail, industrial, hotel, retirement and residential projects across NSW. “NSW can accelerate its economic momentum through a strong infrastructure program and commitment to attracting investment,” NSW Executive Director Glenn Byres said.”Mike Baird could not have sought and received a clearer mandate for his program to finance an infrastructure boom through asset recycling. “We hope all parliamentarians respect the mandate as our growing city requires the next generation of rail and road projects that can get us ahead of the congestion curve. “The property industry is crucial to the State’s economic fortunes – creating one in 10 jobs and paying over $16 billion to workers and their families. “That is why we want to see a spotlight placed on the hurdles to investment by modernising local government and fixing a broken planning system. “Our global city is strangled by the excessive number of councils and the continuing reform agenda needs to lead to a substantial reduction. “The other piece of unfinished business from the Government’s first term is planning reform. “We see the results of a bad system in projections that show Sydney is facing a housing supply deficit of 190,000 homes within a decade. “The Government needs to revisit efforts to transform the planning system through new legislation that cuts red tape, creates clear rules and reduces time and costs for projects.” Media contact: Glenn Byres | M 0419 695 435 | E [email protected]
