Tasmania’s best projects vie for national awards
A heritage development in Hobart, student apartments in Launceston and the extraordinary Three Capes Track are up for national recognition at the 2018 Property Council of Australia / Rider Levett Bucknall Innovation and Excellence Awards.
The awards program, now in its 36th year in partnership with RLB, showcases outstanding projects, innovative solutions and extraordinary leadership in Australia’s property industry.
Hobart’s 40 Molle Street, driven by local developer Nekon Pty Ltd, is a finalist in four categories: the S4B Studio Award for Best Heritage Development; the Equiem Award for Best Project Innovation; the SAS International Award for Best Office Development and the Award for Best Mixed Use Development.
According to the Property Council’s Executive Director in Tasmania, Brian Wightman, converting an 1899 heritage building, previously used as an automotive bodywork shop, into a multi-use development demonstrates the potential of adaptive reuse of old buildings.
“A sympathetic restoration used the existing architecture and structural components, while creating a modern and contemporary space that meets the needs of people today. 40 Molle Street really delivers the best of both worlds,” Mr Wightman says.
Meanwhile, the University of Tasmania’s Inveresk Student Apartments project, a finalist in the WSP Award for Best Sustainable Development – New Buildings, showcases impressive green credentials.
“The University of Tasmania has delivered a design that complements its heritage precinct and optimises its location, with low energy use and a high Green Star rating just two of the outstanding outcomes,” says RLB Managing Director Ewen McDonald.
Finally, Tasmania’s extraordinary Three Capes Track, conceived by Parks and Wildlife Tasmania, JAWSARCHITECTS and built by Vos Construction, is competing in the Brain & Poulter Award for Best Tourism & Leisure Development.
“The Three Capes Track has been described as one of the world’s hottest new experiences. An integral part of this compelling walking experience is staying overnight in one of the three beautifully-designed cabin sites located along the track,” Mr Wightman adds.
National award winners will be announced at the 2018 Property Council of Australia / Rider Levett Bucknall Innovation and Excellence Awards Gala Dinner, to be held at the ICC Sydney Convention Centre on Friday 11 May 2018. Tickets are now on sale.
