Sydney Metro West – New Opportunities for City Growth

Property Council of Australia today welcomed the release of the first Environmental Impact Statement for the Sydney Metro West – the next step in the delivery of a metro rail network to alleviate rail congestion and unlock growth in key growth precincts south of Parramatta River.

“Sydney Metro West has the potential to reshape the city’s growth, unlocking new opportunities for urban renewal while creating an enhanced level of connectivity between Sydney and Parramatta,” Jane Fitzgerald, NSW Executive Director said today.

“On the ground this means Westmead will have the infrastructure it needs to meet its aspiration of delivering a world class health and education precinct, with as many jobs coming to Westmead over the next 20 years as there are in Parramatta today.

“Parramatta is an essential anchor to this metro network, and the new station will cement and maximise the public benefits from the NSW Government’s existing infrastructure spend to build Parramatta into a 24 hour destination for jobs, living, sports and cultural offerings.

“Sydney Olympic Park will continue to transform into a busy centre of its own, hosting a blend of homes, commercial, sports and entertainment opportunities.

“It is also pleasing to see the NSW Government has left open the option of a metro stop at Pyrmont.

“These are very strong steps forward for Sydney’s growth, but none of this can be achieved without the government continuing to press-on with the reform of the State’s planning system.”

The environmental assessment process for Sydney Metro West will be staged in recognition of the size of the project. Current planning documents on exhibition include:

• Westmead to The Bays and Sydney CBD Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). The Sydney Metro West Project Concept from Westmead to the Sydney CBD and Stage 1 works for station excavation and tunnelling between Westmead and The Bays, including the proposed project corridor between these two areas.
• The Bays Road Relocation Works Review of Environmental Factors (REF) – proposed road relocation works at White Bay.
