State of the Territory

The Property Council of Australia is hosting its highly regarded annual State of the Territory lunch on the 27th November.

The State Series is designed to give Territorians in the business community a first-hand look into what both sides of politics have planned for the NT.

“The State of the Union and State of the Territory luncheons are intended to give the business community an opportunity to listen and to ask questions of two respected leaders.” NT director Ruth Palmer said.

“With the major $1 billion announcement of the North East Gas Interconnector (NEGI) Pipeline it is safe to say that the Territory is undergoing some major changes and developments; however there is still a level of uncertainty and confidence with where the Territory is headed.

“We need to continue to build the confidence of the community and people who want to invest here; we need to ensure the investment community sees the NT as a stable investment environment.

“We need to ensure strategic planning is well resourced and that the Territory is in a position to handle the expected population growth while also creating jobs, prosperity and affordable housing for Territorians.

“With tax reform high on the political agenda we will be seeking a commitment from the Chief Minister that there is no intention from government to introduce a land tax, There are a few instances in which the Northern Territory has a competitive advantage over other every other state and territory and the taxes on property are one.

“It would be foolish to even consider any policy that would threaten this competitive advantage; we cannot afford to increase the burden on housing costs which would make investment here unattractive.”
