Scrapping developer review a commonsense move
The Property Council has welcomed Housing and Public Works Minister Sam O’Connor’s announcement that the Queensland Government would be permanently scrapping the developer review which would have added red-tape and increased costs and delays in the middle of a housing and productivity crisis.
Queensland Property Council Executive Director Jess Caire said that the Queensland Government abandoning the developer review was a welcome and commonsense move that would provide industry with much needed certainty as it strives to increase housing supply.
“The Property Council has staunchly opposed the developer review since it was first proposed in 2020,” Ms Caire said.
“There has been no substantive evidence or data provided to support the review since it was proposed by the former government.
“What we do know is that any initiative that would add superfluous red tape in the middle of a housing crisis will slow down the delivery of housing when we need it most.
“Since the Discussion Paper by the Developer Review Panel was published in 2022 the review has stalled because it was clearly a policy overreach that would damage the property sector, delay projects and ultimately cost Queenslanders.
“The demonisation of the property industry over the last decade has exacerbated the housing crisis.
“Now it is time to turn a new leaf and prioritise a collaborative approach where government works in tandem with the property sector to unlock the industry’s capacity to fuel growth,”
“The property sector is responsible for delivering 96 per cent of Queensland’s housing and we will not be able to make meaningful inroads into the housing crisis or deliver the sheer number of office, industrial, health and hotel projects we need unless the industry has the confidence to invest and develop,” Ms Caire said.
