Queensland’s best projects up for national property awards

Brisbane’s Mater Hospital, Pacific Fair on the Gold Coast, and Townsville’s master-planned community, The Village, are among 22 Queensland finalists in the running for recognition when the 2018 Property Council of Australia / Rider Levett Bucknall Innovation and Excellence Awards are held in May.

The awards program, now in its 36th year in partnership with RLB, showcases outstanding projects, innovative solutions and extraordinary leadership in Australia’s property industry.

“Queensland’s property and construction industry consistently delivers high-quality, innovative development, and this is once again underscored by the calibre of our 22 national finalists,” says Chris Mountford, the Property Council’s Executive Director in Queensland.

Among the finalists is Brisbane’s Mater Hospital. A sympathetic restoration of the iconic Whitty building has delivered a contemporary sustainable design and is vying for the S4B Studio Award for Best Heritage Development.

“Constructed in 1911, the heritage-listed Whitty Building was Brisbane’s only second public hospital when it opened more than a century ago. The seamless integration of the new structure and services within the original spaces is a credit to the ingenuity of the project team,” Mr Mountford says.

Also up for recognition for its heritage development is The Residences, Yungaba House, constructed at Brisbane’s Kangaroo Point in 1887.

“It’s been an immigration centre, a refuge for destitute soldiers, construction worker accommodation, a design studio and a hospital. By respecting and retaining the building’s history, the development team will preserve this important landmark for future generations,” says RLB’s Managing Director, David Stewart.

Pacific Fair’s celebrated upgrade is a finalist in three categories for an innovative approach to placemaking, its contribution to tourism and leisure, as well as for its exceptional design.

“AMP Capital’s $670 million investment in Pacific Fair has certainly paid off. More than 20 per cent of the centre’s floor space is now dedicated to food and entertainment, making it a true destination for both visitors and locals. Pacific Fair’s visionary approach demonstrates the future of bricks-and-mortar retailing in the online era,” Mr Mountford explains.

The Village residential estate in Townsville, Economic Development Queensland’s flagship regional development, is also up for awards, including one for housing affordability.

According to Mr Stewart, the award-winning development “demonstrates housing innovation, affordability and diversity, with 78 per cent of residential dwellings priced at or below the median house price in Townsville.”
