Property industry welcomes push to fill hotel space
The Property Council welcomes the Minister for Tourism’s and Tourism WA’s decision to focus on marketing Perth to help fill Perth’s growing number of new hotel rooms.
“Since 2012 there has been 13 new hotels built in Perth. By the end of 2018 a further seven new hotels will come online adding 1421 rooms, adding another 22% to the stock of hotel rooms in Perth,” Property Council WA Executive Director Lino Iacomella said.
“Most of the new hotels are located in the Perth CBD which urgently needs a new strategy to counter a raft of factors causing empty hotel rooms including high office vacancy rates and a subdued retail sector,” Property Council WA Executive Director Lino Iacomella.
“The $2 million investment to promote Perth is a welcome move to address the high levels of vacancies in Perth Hotels.
“Fundamental to growing the number of tourists in Perth, is embracing our position in the Asian region. Our city should be overtly welcoming to Asian tourism and investment in our state.
“However, the focus of the campaign should be in promoting the inner city, as Perth is often lost amongst broader efforts to promote WA.
“If we can effectively advertise our city to overseas and domestic tourism, then it will play a fundamental role in increase the vibrancy and vitality of the inner-city,” Mr Iacomella said.
