Property Council welcomes plan for Tasmania re-opening

The Property Council says the Tasmanian Government’s plan to re-open to interstate travel on December 15th will provide a welcome economic boost for Tasmania.

The Property Council’s Tasmanian Executive Director, Rebecca Ellston, said the Reconnecting Tasmania Plan will provide much-needed certainty and confidence for CBD businesses, retailers and tourism operators who can now plan for the festive season and beyond.

Ms Ellston said, “Throughout the pandemic, Tasmania has been the safest place to work and live, and we’ve been incredibly lucky to have avoided the extended lockdowns experienced in other states. But there is no doubt that ongoing restrictions, border closures and the ever-present threat of a lockdown, have impacted confidence across many sectors.”

“With the festive season fast approaching, and many across the industry gearing up for one of the busiest times of the year the Plan gives both retail and tourism businesses a much-needed boost of confidence, and they can now prepare for a new COVID-normal.”

“It also provides Tasmanians greater certainty about being able to spend time with family and friends at Christmas and celebrate the New Year as we prepare to welcome back our domestic market.”

“Despite the challenges presented by COVID, the Tasmanian economy overall is in a strong position, and I encourage all of us to make the most of the opportunities ahead and help support our local businesses ahead of what we hope will be a bumper festive season.”

“Of course, it’s critical that everyone who is eligible to be vaccinated continues to roll up their sleeves as we work towards achieving a 90% vaccination rate. Let’s get the jab done.”
